black background SETUP
My black background sessions are photographed using only natural light believe it or not! We'll typically be setup at the entrance of a barn aisle or the indoor arena. We'll make sure doors behind your horse are closed and the lights are off. Everything else is photoshopped out of the image, creating a black background.
When I arrive, I'll take a look around and decide which option will work best to photograph in. If there are multiple options, please make sure all entryways are cleared of clutter (muck buckets, garbage cans, chairs, blankets, etc.). If you can sweep and/or rake the entries that helps also!
preparing your horse for the black background session
Having your horse "show ring ready" is the way to go! Please have your horse as clean as possible for the best results! Dusty coats are very difficult to make shiny in photoshop.
Horses are typically photographed in a bridle. We may leave the reins on for some shots and we may remove them and clip a lead rope to the bit for other shots. Please make sure your bridle (and/or leather halter) has been given a good cleaning! The lead rope ends up being photoshopped out in the final images.
Feel free to use this little checklist when getting your horse ready for photos:
- bathe your horse and make sure they're completely dry
- use a soft brush before photos to make sure they're dust free
- green spots removed
- mane & forelock should be combed straight (unless braided)
- bring a rag to wipe eyes, nose & mouth
- braids look beautiful in black background images! (when possible)

What should I wear? I recommend having a couple different options. If you've booked a one hour session, you'll have time for 2-3 outifts. The most photographed are: casual, formal (dress) and show clothes. I highly suggest neutral tones/colors when it comes to clothing -- they photograph so well in every season and go well with every color horse. Please avoid neon colors, busy/loud patterns, wedges, high-heels and open toe shoes. Don't be afraid to layer and accessorize with jewelry, hats and scarves!
